Vaccines for Kittens & Cats

Veterinary medicine divides cat vaccines into two categories: core and non-core vaccinations. Core vaccines are mandatory because they protect against severe diseases that are easily transmitted. The core vaccines your cat/kitten needs are Feline Panleukopenia (Cat Flu/cat distemper), Rabies, Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (Herpes virus) and Calicivirus.

Non-core vaccines are recommended by your veterinarian based on your pet’s exposure risk. Your pet is exposed to certain illnesses based on their environment and lifestyle. Feline Leukemia Virus is a non-core vaccine for cats. Even though not all cats need this vaccine, it is often recommended for kittens under the age of one and adult cats who venture outside as they are at a greater risk for infection.

When should I vaccinate my kitten or cat?

Regardless of your pet’s lifestyle they should receive a full round of vaccines especially when they are young. We recommend kittens begin their vaccinations around 6-weeks-old.

• 6-10 weeks they should get FVRCP (Panleukopenia, Rhinotracheitis and Calicivirus)
• 11-14 weeks kittens should receive FVRCP and Feline Leukemia

16 weeks and older they should be vaccinated against Rabies, FVRCP and Feline Leukemia.
A year after your kitten had their full set of vaccinations, adult cats need their booster shots. Our veterinarians will outline the booster shots your cat will need.

Does my indoor cat need to be vaccinated?

Yes, indoor cats and kittens need to be vaccinated. Even though your pet stays inside they are not immune to illnesses or germs that may be airborne or brought in by other animals.

Are vaccines safe for my pet?

Absolutely! Vaccines are completely safe for your loyal companion. It is normal for your pet to have a reaction that may last up to 48 hours. Some pets may become lethargic, have diarrhea, hives or fever.
