We prioritize your pet's comfort and care at every stage, from surgery to recovery.
Surgery for your cherished companion sounds scary, but sometimes it cannot be avoided. At Fredericton Animal Hospital, our doctors have years of expertise performing successful surgeries. We use modern technology and techniques to ensure the safety of your pet during every procedure. Our surgical suite is similar to those in human hospitals and our surgical tools and equipment are kept clean and in great condition. When your pet has a surgery at our hospital you can rest assured our team works hard for the best outcome for your pet.
On the morning of the surgery our team does a full examination of your pet. We perform pre-anesthetic blood work to see if your pet is in good shape for the operation. The blood test also shows kidney and liver function, protein, electrolyte and glucose levels. These are important as they determine the amount of anesthesia and post-operative medications to use.
During surgery general anesthesia is administered through an IV catheter placed in your pet’s leg. Anesthesia helps relax your pet and makes them numb to the surgery. Your loyal companion is given oxygen through a tube placed in their windpipe. During surgery, a veterinary technician closely monitors your pet’s fluid and oxygen levels, heart rate, blood pressure and anesthesia. Another technician may also be in the operating room assisting the doctor. Once the operation is completed we monitor your furry friend through their initial recovery from the anesthesia. We then send the patient home for their full recovery with medications and instructions for administering.
If your pet had a recent operation, we are here if you have questions. Please don’t hesitate to call us at 506-455-1700.

Special preparation for each surgery differs for each patient. If your pet has pre-existing conditions they may have different guidelines to follow. When your pet has a procedure scheduled with us our team will inform you of any special precautions to take before surgery. We encourage all patients to be up-to-date with their vaccinations and they should not consume food after 5:00 am on the day of the operation. Access to water is encouraged up until the surgery admit.
